SNOW RESORT KIRKENES
Seasons & Climate
Kirkenes offers a striking blend of tundra, rugged mountains, dense pine forests, and literally thousands of lakes. The region is blessed with long, cold, and stable winters, followed by short yet vibrant summers that for a brief moment transform the land into a green, almost lush paradise.
Winter (November – April)
Winter in Kirkenes is long, crisp, and full of Arctic magic. Blanketed in deep snow and bathed in the soft light of the Polar Night, the landscape becomes a dreamlike world of white. From mid-November to mid-January, the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon, but the sky glows in shades of blue, pink, and orange, and the Northern Lights often dance overhead. The Aurora Borealis can be seen regularly until around April 15th, lighting up the dark Arctic skies in brilliant displays of green and purple. This is the season for unforgettable adventures: glide across frozen lakes on a dog sled, chase the aurora across the tundra, or venture out on a snowmobile through the silent wilderness. Guests can sleep in the Snowhotel’s glittering ice suites, dine on fresh king crab, or relax in a warm glass-roofed cabin under the aurora. With stable weather, still air, and temperatures ranging from –5 °C to –30 °C, winter here feels pure and timeless.
Spring (April – May)
As daylight returns and the snow begins to soften, spring in Kirkenes feels like a quiet awakening. Days grow long and bright, and the snow-covered mountains glisten under a strengthening Arctic sun. It’s the perfect time for late-season dog sledding or snowmobiling, as the conditions remain excellent but the temperatures are more forgiving. The Aurora Borealis can still be seen until about April 15th, offering one last chance to witness its magic before the light of summer takes over. Ice fishing and king crab safaris continue, offering a chance to experience the Arctic wilderness in its most peaceful state. Locals and visitors alike enjoy this season of light, when winter’s grip slowly loosens and the land begins to breathe again. Visit the Snowhotel 365 and meet the huskies and reindeer that call this place home – a true glimpse of life in the far north.
Summer (June – August)
Summer transforms Kirkenes into a land of endless light. Under the Midnight Sun, the sun never sets from mid-May to late July, and days stretch into nights without darkness, allowing limitless time for exploration. Lush green forests, mirror-like lakes, and blooming tundra invite hiking, canoeing, and RIB boat tours along the fjords. Visitors can join a king crab safari or explore the region’s border culture and wartime history. Even in summer, you can sleep at –4 °C in the year-round open Snowhotel 365 – a truly unique experience. Or stay close to nature in our wilderness luxury chalets, the Gamme cabins, with reindeer grazing in the forest outside. A visit to the dog farm is also included, making for an unforgettable Arctic adventure. With temperatures around 10–15 °C and a golden glow in the air, summer in Kirkenes is short but bursting with life.
Autumn (Late August – October)
Autumn paints the Arctic in deep reds, golds, and oranges. The air grows crisp, and the first frosts sparkle on the moss and heather. As the Midnight Sun fades, darkness gradually returns — and with it, the Northern Lights begin their season once again. The Aurora Borealis is possible to see from around August 20th, marking the return of the dancing lights after months of daylight. It’s an ideal time for cozy evenings at the Snowhotel, aurora-hunting tours, and sampling freshly caught king crab. Outdoor adventurers enjoy RIB safaris, hiking through fiery autumn landscapes, or fishing in crystal-clear waters. Visit the Snowhotel 365, and meet our friendly huskies and reindeer before settling into a warm Gamme cabin for the night. By October, the days shorten, the Aurora Borealis dances more frequently across the sky, and the first snowflakes fall, signaling that another magical winter is near.
