A memorable and enriching experience that brings Arctic culture to life.

The Sámi Experience offers an authentic insight into the culture, traditions, and daily life of the indigenous Sámi people. The experience takes place inside a reindeer enclosure, where you can feed the reindeer and learn about their significance in Sámi culture and reindeer herding practices. The journey continues to a traditional lavvu (Sámi tent), with opportunities to try traditional skills such as lasso casting, once used in reindeer herding. Inside the lavvu, you can gather around the fire to listen to stories and folklore that have been passed down through generations, concluding with a performance of joik, the traditional and deeply expressive Sámi form of singing.

This experience is available all year round, in every season—whether under the northern snow or the summer sun—and can be enjoyed alone or as part of a group.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a reindeer?

The reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), also known as caribou in North America, is a species of deer with circumpolar distribution, native to Arctic, Subarctic, tundra, boreal and mountainous regions of northern Europe, Siberia, and North America. There are about 170.000 reindeer in Norway.

Reindeer husbandry today in Norway is a small industry on a national scale, but both in a Sámi and local context, it has great importance. Reindeer husbandry is not only important economically and in employment terms, it is also one of the most important parts of the Sámi culture.
